Scrubba Dub Dub... with some grub!

Winter is coming up and there is no better time to exfoliate.  You have to rub away the dead skin cells before moisturizing for super soft skin, but there is no need to spend a lot of money on expensive scrubs.  It is so easy to make one at home with ingredients you already have.  I used all stuff I had in the pantry and made two completely different scrubs.

Here are some of the ingredients I used...

You can add anything that will be abrasive against your skin (sea salt or brown sugar) and moisturize (olive oil, honey, vaseline).  Then add some scents you enjoy (vanilla extract, cinnamon, essential oils).

I made my roommate a sea salt, vaseline, vanilla, and coconut scrub (I used some coconut scented hair serum shown in the picture below).

I made myself a brown sugar, olive oil, honey, vanilla, and cinnamon scrub.

Use about 1/2 cup of your exfoliant, a few tablespoons of the moisture content, and a few drops or sprinkles of your yummy smelling stuff.  Sea salt will give a coarser scrub than the brown sugar, but if you want a coarser sugar scrub use some turbinado sugar.

Now for the science...

  • brown sugar is all natural so it won't irritate sensitive skin, contains Vitamin B (due to the molasses in it), and also contains dermatologist's favorite ingredient glycolic acid
  • sea salt will draw out skin toxins and reduce swelling (everyone's body is swollen in the morning)
  • honey contains alpha hydroxy acids that can help loosen the bonds between dead skin cells and aid in shedding them
  • olive oil is well known for being one of the best moisturizers out there and contains Vitamin E
  • vaseline contains paraffin wax and is an occlusive moisturizer which locks water into the skin

So scrub away... just try not to eat it

  1. Nice! I also like that the "science" is all natural. :) Most people think that science isn't natural, but it is!
